The South Carolina State quarterback, Ryan Stubblefield, played like he wasn’t going to relive what he felt playing in the 2024 Celebration Bowl when they lost to Jackson State 28-7. The Bulldogs were able to take advantage of Prairie View Chase Bingmon’s miscue on a reverse play, fumbling the ball, which South Carolina State Jordan Dollard recovered. The Bulldogs were able to score their first points of the game on a 5-yard rushing touchdown, which led to them scoring 21 unanswered points in the third quarter to tie the game 21-21.
The Panthers were able to regroup and drive the ball down the field to retake the lead 28-21 behind Cameron Peters’ touchdown pass to Andre Dennis. The Bulldogs gained momentum in the fourth quarter, with 10:43 left in the game, and tied the score 28-28 on a Ryan Stubblefield rushing touchdown. Cameron Peters threw a 78-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Bonner, retaking the lead in the fourth quarter 35-28, with 9:53 left to go in the game.
Stubblefield has methodically driven the Bulldogs’ offense down the field. It’s 4th and 15. Stubblefield connects with Jordan Smith for a first down to maintain possession of the football. The Bulldogs are on the 13-yard line, needing to score a touchdown to force the game to overtime. Two minutes left in the game, and Stubblefield throws a touchdown pass to Jordan Smith to tie the game 35-35. Prairie View gets penalized for running into the kicker on the extra point attempt. Bulldogs kick off, and the ball goes out of bounds, giving Prairie View excellent field position at the 35-yard line.

Prairie View was trying to move the ball down the field to score on a winning touchdown or field goal, but was denied by the Bulldogs’ defense. The Panthers punted the ball back to South Carolina State’s offense. Stubblefield was moving the Bulldogs’ offense down the field to position them for a winning field goal was sacked, forcing time to run out on the clock in regulation.
In overtime, both teams were able to kick field goals, forcing a second overtime with South Carolina State Ryan Stubblefield throwing an interception to Prairie View Cornelius Davis. Prairie View had a chance to win the game on a Diego Alfaro field goal that was no good. In the fourth overtime, the controversy happened because the pass from Stubblefield to Tyler Smith was in question as to whether he was in bounds when the ball crossed the goal line. South Carolina State Ryan Stubblefield came in for Williams Atkins IV late in the second quarter, completed 15 of 29 passes for 234 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception, and had 1 rushing touchdown on 11 carries for 11 yards. Jordan Smith had 9 receptions for 152 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 rushing touchdown on 5 carries for 28 yards. Tyler Smith carried the ball 8 times for 22 yards and 1 rushing touchdown.
The play was upheld by the officials, giving South Carolina State its first lead in the game. Prairie View had one opportunity to tie the game, and Cameron Peters’ pass attempt was incomplete. The South Carolina State Bulldogs win the 2025 Celebration Bowl and are named HBCU National Champions.
