The hype of the WNBA basketball season has gotten off to a good start. Tickets and merchandise sales have increased along with viewership. The WNBA brand is on fire right now. Since the addition of rookies Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark to the WNBA things couldn’t be better for WNBA owners.
While the owners and sports analysts are excited about all of the attention the brand is getting with the additional press and revenue being generated, some have forgotten about the women who have put in blood sweat, and tears over the years to keep the competitive nature rolling and if the new rookies are not ready to compete night in and night out, there may be a player or two that will turn the heat up a little bit on the court to see if they are really about that action when it comes to playing in the WNBA.
Connecticut Sun Alyssa Thomas is known for her triple-doubles, but the incoming rookie class, as well as those who are looking to win the WNBA Championship this season, will have to contend with a tough, gritty player who gets the job done on the defensive end of the court as well. Sun’s Thomas old-school playing style would have some fans thinking about the days when Rick Mahorn and the Detroit Pistons were terrorizing teams in the paint, setting screens, boxing out opposing team players to grab rebounds, back door cuts to the basket for easy scores, or backing down a player into the paint to make an easy basket and possibly get the and 1 opportunity, not to mention if the team’s opposing player drove the ball into the lane, it would be consequences and repercussions.
Many fans who are new to the WNBA haven’t seen women players be as physical on the court as they are playing. Sun’s Thomas understands to win a championship the team’s defense must be on point. The Connecticut Sun has started the season to a great start and look to finish it holding up the Commissioner’s Cup Trophy when all of the dust settles at the end of the season.
