Chargers Upset Chiefs: Defense Shines in First Win Since 2021

The Chargers’ defense kept Mahomes in the pocket and prevented him from using his legs to dictate the outcome of this close matchup.  The Chargers’ defensive lineman Teair Tart deflected several of Mahomes’ passes, keeping the Chiefs’ offense from converting plays that would keep their offense on the field. The Chiefs are without two playmakers, wide receiver Rashee Rice, who is serving a 6-game suspension, and Xavier Worthy, who was injured on the third play of the game with a possible shoulder injury, changing their game plan against the Chargers.

The Chiefs are down 9 points with 3:50 left in the game, 4th and 7 on their 42-yard line. Mahomes throws a pass to wide-open Hollywood Brown inside the 10-yard line.  Mahomes threw consecutive incomplete passes.  One pass that Chief fans knew would get caught was the second-down pass to Travis Kelce, who slowed down on the route and watched the ball sail past him. The Chiefs settled for a field goal, making the score 21-27, hoping to stop the Chargers’ offense and get another chance at winning the game.  The Chiefs’ defense was unreliable, leaving Chargers wide receivers completely open throughout the game, at the most inopportune times, which allowed them to secure the victory tonight.

Justin Herbert and the Chargers converted on 3rd and 19 in the fourth quarter with two minutes left in the game. Herbert used his legs to pick up the first down that would seal the victory because there was no spy to prevent Herbert from running for 19 yards untouched to convert the first down.  The one time the Chiefs didn’t have a spy on Herbert, he made them pay with the game on the line.  The Chiefs were out of timeouts, allowing the Chargers to line up in victory formation and win their first game against the Chiefs, ending a four-year losing streak.

Chargers Head Coach Harbaugh’s aggressive play calling tonight kept the Chiefs defense on their heels, allowing Herbert to put on a passing display, completing 25 of 34 passes for 318 yards and 2 touchdowns.    The Chiefs’ defense looked out of sorts as the defensive backs were not in sync with one another, missing coverage assignments, leaving Charger receivers wide open throughout the game.  At the end of the game, frustrations were boiling over with Chief teammates Drue Tranquill and Chris Jones arguing over the missed assignment that allowed Herbert and the Chargers to convert the first down, ending the game.

The Chargers got their first division win against the Chiefs since 2021, and the confidence this team played with tonight could propel the team’s overall confidence to win the division and beat the Chiefs later in the season when they meet again.  The Chiefs play the Eagles next week and need to get organized on both sides of the ball, or they could see themselves down 0-2 for the first time since 2014, when the team went 9-7 on the season.  The Chargers face off against the Las Vegas Raiders in another division match-up next week, wanting to show the Charger fans this wasn’t a fluke win.
