Angel Reese’s Frustrations: Chicago Sky’s Turbulent Season

The Chicago Sky Angel Reese’s second year in the WNBA has been rough for the power forward, having high expectations of competing for a WNBA Championship, which expectations were put to rest when the team was mathematically eliminated from the playoffs on August 20th, when the Los Angeles Sparks defeated the Dallas Wings.  Reese has grown frustrated with the way she is being officiated on the court, defending players, and the disparity in free-throw attempts.

Early on during the season, fellow teammate Ariel Atkins had to defend Reese during a post-game conference when she was being asked non-basketball questions concerning negative comments she received on social media.  Atkins said “So whatever questions y’all got about our team, basketball-wise we appreciate it. But all the other nonsene, it’s irrelevant.” The Sky has definitely had a rough season with a record 10-31 and people continuing to try and knock Angel Reese crown off her head to get and out of character response from the second year WNBA player. Atkins did say that she applauds her teammate for how she had handled the media scrutiny with grace and not cracking under pressure.   Teammates like Atkins is someone Reese shouldn’t have a problem with competing next to on a nightly basis.

Reese was assessed her 8th technical foul during the Connecticut Sun game after making contact with Aaliyah Edwards’ head.  Reese and Edwards were both trying to gain position in the paint to secure the rebound.  Reese was shown hitting Edwards in the head after receiving a hard hip check underneath the basket during the game.

The WNBA rule states “a player or coach is automatically suspended for one game without pay for their eighth technical foul during the regular season”. Reese served her one game suspension missing the final matchup against the Indiana Fever on Friday night. The Chicago Sky star will sit out the first half of the Los Angeles Aces game today for comments made to the Chicago Tribune that the Sky organization has deemed detrimental to the team. Reese comments concerning the Sky roster and the current direction of the organization, saying “the team needs to bring in better players and criticized Chicago’s ability to attract free agents”. Reese apologized to her teammates for her comments after the article was published.

Angel Reese isn’t the first star player of the Chicago Sky to complain about the basketball organization the lack of recruiting talent that can help the team compete for a championship. Former Sky players Courtney Williams and Candace Parker, whose jersey was retired last month, complained about the practice facility and having to share a locker with someone else.  Former Chicago Sky player Kahleah Cooper, 2021 WNBA Finals MVP, requested a trade to focus on basketball.  Reese stated she may request a trade at the end of the season.  If that happens, the Chicago Sky should take a hard look at the way they handle their day-to-day operations when it comes to their athletes.  If the organization chose to continue not investing in their athletes, they will continue to hear more complaints from players. This could be the reason why free agents are overlooking the Chicago Sky organization to continue their WNBA careers.

Angle Resse for the season through 30 games has averaged 14.7 points per game, 12.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.7 blocks.  Reese is shooting 46.4% from the field.  If Reese decides to request a trade at the end of the season will be interesting to see how everything turns out for the 2 time WNBA All-Star.
