SWAC Championship: Will Prairie View A&M Panthers Rise as Contenders?

Prairie View, TX – Prairie View A&M (PVAM) Head Coach McDowell hopes to build off the 6-2 conference record last season with the new additions to the program.  The Panthers will be without quarterback Trazon Connley who has moved on from the program.  There looks to be a new day that has dawned at the quarterback position with Kilgore College transfer Cameron Peters coming into the Panthers football program.  The beauty of this transfer is the quarterback is coming to the Panthers with both of his starting offensive tackles William Boone and Caleb Leonard who are transferring from Kilgore College as well.

Peters will need to work on making faster reads because he tends to let defenders have opportunities to sack him in the backfield when he could have thrown the ball away or tried to get a gain rushing the ball on the play.  Peters from time to time will throw the ball off his back foot, which Coach McDowell will look to fix before the season kicks off.   Leonard and Williams are pretty good blockers on the offensive line who always keep their feet moving and stay engaged with the defender they are blocking until the whistle blows.

PVAM averaged 19.50 points per game while allowing 31.17.  Coach McDowell understands everything starts up front and he recruits the players who can come in and be productive right away.  Will the Panthers be sleepers in the SWAC West, or will there be another team on the horizon when the smoke clears and it’s time to play for the SWAC championship?  The Panther’s defense will need to work on getting off the field because he will tend to think he has time to throw passes down the field by moving the pocket when defenders are his decision-making after last season may have found the one missing piece the Panthers could have used last season.
