Charlotte, NC – The announcement of the former Jackson State Head Women’s Basketball Coach Tomekia Reed being introduced as the new Head Women’s Basketball Coach of the UNC Charlotte 49ers program, I said she has arrived. Over the past few seasons Coaches of Power 5 programs that coached against the Jackson State Women’s Basketball team, especially in the NCAA Tournament were impressed with how prepared Coach Reed’s teams were when competing against them.
Coach Reed Jackson State Women’s Basketball team made it to the NCAA Tournament on three different occasions, 2021, 2022, and 2024. The Lady Tigers also played in the NIT Tournament in 2023. The Head Coaches for LSU Tigers Coach Mulkey and Uncon Coach Auriemma have given high praises to Coach Reed and Coach Mulkey made it clear after her LSU team played against Coach Reed Jackson State team that she wouldn’t be at Jackson State too much longer.
While at Jackson State University Coach Reed coined the moniker “This Is Where The Rings Reside”, in six seasons with an overall record of 125-54, five consecutive regular-season Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships, and three Southwestern Athletic Conference championships. Two of Coach Reed Jackson State Women’s Basketball players were drafted to the WNBA 2022 Ameshya Williams-Holiday to the Indiana Fever and 2024 Angel Jackson to the Las Vegas Aces.
Today is bittersweet for the former Jackson State Women’s Basketball Head Coach Tomekia Reed, because she accomplished so much while coaching a team in the very state she resided. UNC Charlotte has a true champion and leader of women who have a great coaching nucleus that will uplift this UNC Charlotte 49ers women’s basketball team.
