Delaware State Hornets: Dominating FCS Rushing Attack

The rushing attack for the Delaware State Hornets football team has put the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) on notice.  The Hornets’ performance through the first three games of the season is ranked 1st in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, averaging 282.3 yards per game, 8 touchdowns, and 6.0 yards per carry.

This isn’t something new to Delaware State Hornets fans, because they’ve had running backs come into the program who have set rushing records while playing for the program.  One former Hornet running back that comes to mind is  Gene Lake. During the 1984 season, Gene Lake carried the ball 238 times for 1722 yards with 20 rushing touchdowns.  Lake is the Hornets’ 3rd all-time in rushing the ball for 3123 yards from 1982-84, 4th in rushing attempts per game, 1st in rushing yards per season and game, 1st in career rushing and season rushing touchdowns,  2nd in rushing attempts, 2nd in longest run from scrimmage, 4th in career rushing attempts, and 1st in rushing yards per game.

The Delaware State Hornets football running back coach former NFL running back Clinton Portis can speak to the accomplishments of Gene Lake during his time playing for the University of Miami when he tied the University of Miami Football rushing record with 14 career 100-yard rushing games, 8th most rushing touchdowns, 4th most rushing yards 2523, and Portis holds the freshman rushing yards record with 838 in 1999.

The Hornets football team is currently 2-1 under Coach Jackson, and their rushing attack has been the catalyst for their team’s current success.  The Hornets’ running back room with Marquis Gillis, James Jones, Jayden Jenkins, and Sean Weston will be difficult to handle as the season progresses, because they are being taught by a former NFL running back who played in big games and made his time count when he touched the field.
