Birmingham, AL – The excitement of the 2024 Southwestern Media Day (SWAC) has everyone excited because the start of the football season is near, and teams are getting prepared to kick the season off. Fans who have a love for HBCU football are ready to see the bands, pageantry, and tailgating before and during the game that takes up their Saturday spending time watching their favorite HBCU football team compete against an opposing team.
The SWAC media gave student-athletes who may want to play for an HBCU an opportunity to get to know a little bit about the programs that play in the SWAC through interviews with the players and coaches who represented each HBCU program in the conference that was shown on ESPN+. The SWAC announced their Pre-Season SWAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year along with the First and Second-Team Pre-Season Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year. Grambling State Myles Crawley who originally started his collegiate career at Alabama State transferred to the Tigers in 2023 and played under former Head Coach Hue Jackson improved the Tiger’s passing offense from 11th at the end of the 2022 SWAC Season to 5th after the 2023 SWAC Season. Crawley threw for 2303 yards, completing 197 passes, and 16 touchdowns.
Southern University Jaguars Defensive End Ckelby Givens was named the SWAC Pre-Season Defensive Player of the Year, who led the SWAC in multiple defensive categories, with 24 total Tackles for Loss, 6 Sacks, and 4 Force Fumbles.
The 2024 SWAC Preseason Predicted Football Complete list to Finish, has Grambling State finishing 3rd and Southern University finishing 4th in the West Division.
