Durham, NC – A new era is set to begin within the NCCU Eagles football program this season because the highly decorated quarterback Davius Richard is no longer with the program because he’s seeking to join the ranks of playing professional football. Richard was named MEAC Offensive Player of the Year two years straight. He also led the Eagles onto victory for the HBCU National Championship beating Jackson State in the Celebration Bowl in 2022, where he was named, MVP leaves some big shoes to fill, and Walker Harris who has played behind Richard for several years should be tapped on the shoulder to lead the Eagles this season as the starting quarterback.
Head Football Coach Tre Oliver is getting his North Carolina Central University Eagles Football team ready to compete against Alabama State University in the Orange Blossom Classic football game about 8 weeks away. The doubters and naysayers have written the Eagles program off saying they won’t get another bite of the apple to compete for another HBCU National Championship in the Celebration Bowl now that quarterback Davius Richard has moved on from the program.
The Walker Harris era will begin as the Eagles starting quarterback in a little over 8 weeks from now against the Alabama State Hornets football team in the Orange Blossom Classic. Head Coach Oliver and his coaching staff’s ability to retain players with their development and preparation will have their quarterback and that Eagles offense ready under Harris ability to get comfortable with running the Eagles offense full-time.
Harris had the opportunity of watching Richard masterfully run the Eagles offense over the past three seasons and now comes the time for Harris to prove there will be no drop-off in the quarterback play for the NCCU Eagles. One critical thing that all opponents must remember, Harris will have players at his disposal like running backs Arthur Rodgers Jr, J’Mari Taylor along with wide receivers Joaquin Davis, and Quentin McCall who will make sure they can help Harris continue to efficiently move the offense down the field. The Eagles have more than enough playmakers on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball that are returning for the Eagles to be a force within the MEAC this upcoming season to have another opportunity to win the conference Championship and play for the HBCU National Championship in the Celebration Bowl. Will this be the Eagles year to win the MEAC Football Conference and the Celebration Bowl?
