Alabama State vs UAB: A Thrilling 2025 College Football Opener

The 2025 college football season has begun with the Alabama State Hornets facing off against the University of Alabama Birmingham Blazers.  These two teams gave both of their fan bases something to be excited about with the offensive output from both teams.    The Blazers and Hornets combined for a total of 94 points in this game and 1034 yards in combined offense.

Alabama State quarterback Andrew Body took off down the field like someone shot him out of a cannon for a 60-yard rushing touchdown on their opening offensive drive after holding the Blazers to a field goal, putting the Hornets ahead 7-3.   Andrew Body’s play-making ability was a major problem for the Blazers’ defense because he was forcing them to overpursue on plays, causing the defensive line to misplay their gap assignments.  The Hornets quarterback, Andrew Body, rushed the ball 16 times for 119 yards and 1 touchdown and added 312 yards passing and 4 touchdowns.

Jalen Kitna, the son of former NFL quarterback Jon Kitna, played from the pocket and ran when he needed to, showing poise in the pocket, completing 18 passes for 247  yards to the open Blazers’ receivers.   The Blazers established their rushing attack behind Jevon Jackson, who rushed the ball 17 times for 166 yards and two touchdowns.

Alabama State had a 4-point lead going into the half, after the Hornets’ defense stopped the Blazers on the 3-yard line.   Andrew Body led his Hornets football team on an 8:27 97-yard scoring drive that gave them a 4-point lead at the half with the score 21-17.  The Hornets’ offense wasn’t done.  After receiving the opening kickoff of the second half, Andrew Body and the Hornets offense marched down the field on a 4:45 66-yard touchdown drive, increasing their lead to 11 points, making the score 28-17.

The Hornets quarterback played a mistake-free football game until late in the third quarter when he fumbled the ball and the Blazers recovered.  Two plays later, UAB running back Jevon Jackson was able to surgically maneuver through the Hornets’ defensive front for a 46-yard touchdown, increasing the Blazers’ lead to 10 points, putting the game out of reach for the Hornets.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference better get ready because the Hornets’ offense showed what they can do on the field with a healthy Andrew Body.  The Blazers won the game tonight, but a new star was born, and his name is Andrew Body for the Alabama State Hornets.
