2023 CIAA Championship Game: Fayetteville State vs. Virginia Union Matchup Analysis

Fayetteville State University’s defense has been stingy this season allowing a little under 15 points per game.   The Broncos will look to hang their hat on giving their offense additional opportunities to put points on the board.

Fayetteville State Linebacker Brain Grier, Defensive End Shawn Robinson, and the Broncos Defensive Back crew are going to attack Virginia Union running backs and receivers.

In the previous matchup between Fayetteville State and Virginia Union, both teams made mistakes in the game.  Fayetteville State was deep in the red zone and fumbled the ball on the 8-yard line.  Virginia Union fumbled away an opportunity to put points on the board driving down the field along with a missed field goal.

Fayetteville State was able to capitalize on those mistakes to win the game.  One thing Fayetteville State must be prepared to deal with in this matchup is Virginia Union University running back Jada Byers will play in this matchup.  Virginia Union University running back Curtis Allen shouldered the load by running the ball in the first matchup, but unfortunately, fumbled the ball when the Panthers were driving down the field.

The Broncos will have both Panthers running backs Jada Byers and Curtis Allen to contend with in this game.

Weather shouldn’t be an issue in this CIAA Championship game.  Virginia Union Quarterback Christian Reid must make the right decisions on the field when looking to go vertical throwing the ball down the field to his Panther receivers.  Honestly, the way the Panthers ran the ball in their last meeting, expect Virginia Union to ride the backs of both Panthers running backs in this game to win the CIAA Championship.

Fayetteville State will use two quarterbacks in this game Demari Daniels and Caden Davis to keep Virginia Union’s defense off-balanced especially when it comes to their running game.  Caden Davis has plays scripted specifically for him to run the ball while incorporating running backs Bryce Council, and Caden Daniels.

Virginia Union Defensive front gap containment will be key forcing Fayetteville State University into throwing the ball more in this game.  The Bronco’s passing game is the weakest part of their offense.  If they find a way to get that passing game going against Virginia Union, Virginia Union could be in trouble.

This game will come down to which team can play mistake-free football and whichever team can do that will be crowned the 2023 CIAA Champion after this game.
